My dog loves this product. There is a downside though. We have placed the fountain on the side of our deck; Every time we walk by the fountain turns on. Our deck is permanently wet now, not good for the wood! This is something to consider before purchasing the product. However, our dog loves the fountain and I will try to figure out a way to sort our placement issues out.

I was a bit leery buying this at first. I have 3 large dogs. Two of them are puppies!! Let me explain . . .I have a 1 yr old Rott and a 8 month old German Shepherd and a 12 yr old boy. The G.S. 8mth 60 lb puppy loves to dump and chew up all water bowls. I even tried going to a horse feed store and buying a heavy, weighted down 12 in diameter 5 in tall ceramic bowl. Thinking I had won since he couldn't dump this one . . He pawed all the water out. This was all at the beginning of summer and I was worried about them (especially my old boy) being w/o water while I was at work. So, I bought this automatic water fountain. IT IS GREAT!!!! I was sure Mr. 8 month old would chew on it . . .he hasn't!! I love that they don't have to lick it to make it work as my old boy would not have done that. It senses as they walk up to it and turns on. I put my large weighted down bowl under it to catch the water. ALL my dogs like it and use it. The G.S. pup likes "turning it on". The pups drink straight from it while my old one drinks from the bowl. The G.S. pup does play in the water and paw at the bowl. But, there is always new, fresh water available!! No one has chewed or messed with it. I have had it about 6 months and it has had NO problems and I LOVE IT!! If it broke I would go out the same day and buy a new one. :-)

I ordered this item a few months ago and it worked well for the first week. Like another reviewer, I placed the watering bowl underneath to catch the water until the auto-shutoff. The product started to work intermittently - so I replaced the batteries but it still only worked every other time I tested it. Our two labrador retrievers must have gotten frustrated when it didn't work, because we came home to find it laying on the ground chewed up. After a complex repair, we got it mounted again, only to come home the next day and find it on the ground, chewed up again. It is a great concept, but it's too easy for the dogs to work the unit loose from the pipe, and too expensive to replace each time it gets attacked. Maybe it should be made from stainless steel.

The Drink Better pet bowl encourages dogs to drink at a slower, healthier rate, and make less mess while they're at it. Many dogs instinctively drink too fast. Besides making a wet mess, this habit can contribute to digestive problems such as indigestion and vomiting, and light-haired dogs may experience staining of the muzzle (from chlorinated water). I have a golden doodle that gulps down water so quickly that he ends up throwing it up a few minutes later and I hoped that this bowl would help. Unfortunately, it didn't. My dog still makes a mess with the bowl and I guess he just pushes down the floating part so he still ends up gulping down water. Also, the bowl is pretty small for even my medium size dog.

I cannot tell you how excited I am about this product! I was very skeptical as Weimaraners tend to have jowls that collect the water and later lead to trails of water all over the place. My pup is very well behaved otherwise and having just moved to a condo, I was really concerned about the cleanliness of our place.

I bought the bowl after much deliberation and I have to say, I am SO glad I did. At first I filled the little insert with water most of the way and she got used to the concept of having the little floater in the middle (of course at that point in time, there were water trails but as with any learning process, patience is a must). After I saw that she was non-plussed by the floater, I then removed half of the water from the floater and that restricted some of the water flow but now she was somewhat licking the water off of it and getting used to the sensation. Still water trails of course. Finally, after a week or so of this, I removed all of the water from the floater and she now drinks in a way that leaves no water in her jowls. I am happy to report "0" water trails in my condo. What a pleasure this is!!! I don't have to wipe after her or stress about stepping into gross doggy drool anymore! I recommend this to anyone out there but you HAVE to make sure you are patient and train your dog gradually to drink slower. You won't regret it!
